Adopting a dog into your home is an exciting step for you and your family. Yet, with pet adoption comes additional responsibility. An adopted pet is not simply a guest in your home; a pet is a new member of your family. If you have children and are interested in finding a great family dog, take a look at some of these breeds.
Golden Retriever
All dogs can be great with a family if socialized and trained properly. Dogs that are eager to please and obedient can be more easily acclimated, however. Golden Retrievers are perhaps the most popular breed of family dog. Known for their devoted and obedient nature, Golden Retrievers are among the most loyal companion animals in the world. Their gentle personalities make Golden Retrievers great for kids and keep them from being too physically protective of their owners.
Beagle
Beagles are notoriously friendly to both other dogs and people, making them perfect for families with small children. Beagles can be quite energetic at times, so regular exercise is absolutely essential for your family’s Beagle. If allowed an appropriate amount of physical activity, Beagles can make very calm and manageable house pets.
Pug
Pugs are distinctly non-confrontational and eager to please their owners. They can be stubborn at times but generally require little maintenance. If you are looking for a smaller dog to potentially enter a home with other animals, a Pug is probably a good fit.
Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese mountain dog has a big heart to go with its hearty body. Mild-mannered by nature, Bernese mountain dogs are great with children, smaller animals, and often shy around strangers. Their coats, although gorgeous, can leave a mess, but if you are capable of accommodating a big and beautiful dog, a Bernese mountain dog is as loving a pet as you will find.

Pets can become an important and cherished part of any family. As wonderful as it is to have these animals around, it can be a scary experience losing them. Animal services are a great resource in helping you find a lost pet, and here are some other tips that may help you reconnect with your lost animal.
Contact Local Shelters
Contacting every local animal shelter within 60 miles or so is a good place to start if you have lost your pet. Shelter information can be found online or in the phonebook. If there are no shelters close to your home, contact local law enforcement. Always provide a photograph and detailed description.
Search Your Neighborhood
If your dog or cat has run away, there is a good chance they aren’t far from your home. Walk or drive through your neighborhood each day for several hours. Knock on your neighbors’ doors and give them information on how to reach you if they see your pet. Old-fashioned flyers can be helpful as well.
Check the Internet
Sites like Craigslist and The Center for Lost Pets have web pages specifically for lost and found animal postings. Create a post on the message boards describing your dog and upload a picture. Be sure and check the websites several times a day to see if anybody has found a dog matching your description. Be wary of scams. If a person contacts you claiming to have found your dog or cat, make sure they can accurately describe the animal. Never wire somebody money in exchange for your pet.
Be Consistent
Finding a lost pet can take time, sometimes months. Being thorough and consistent about looking for your animal will provide you with the best chance of finding your pet. Try to keep your animal’s collar and tags on at all times, as properly collared animals are more likely to be found and returned.
